For such a long time I’ve considered using a lip liner before applying the lipstick an extra, useless and rather annoying step in my makeup routine. For sheer laziness, to be honest!
That’s why having your makeup done by a professional it’s the best thing to do! You discover that the minimal step you always underrate makes a whole lot of a difference in how your makeup looks and how long it lasts on your face.
Now that I’ve found some amazing lip liners that are truly staples in my makeup routine I want to share them with you.
For me a good lip liner has to be the perfect balance between a creamy consistency and a “hard” one, to glide on the contour of your lips, to have enough pigmentation to be worn under a lipstick without altering its colour but also to be worn easily by itself and to be long lasting for the lipstick to also last longer on the lips.
I was lucky enough to find quite a few lip liners that respond to all the criteria and those are: Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Re-Shape & Re-Size Lip Liner Pillowtalk and Pink Venus, the Burberry Lip Definer #02 Dusty Rose and the one that goes with everything, at any time – the Dior Universal Lip Liner.
I will start with my most recent discoveries the Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Re-Shape & Re-Size Lip Liner Pillowtalk and Pink Venus, because these are fairly recent launches in the beauty world and they still have a lot of hype around them. And for such good reasons!
They are Charlotte Tilbury‘s most appreciated “cheating” backstage weapons. Velvety and rich, they glide on well without tugging your lips and you can create an amazing long wearing base for other lip products. There are five colours in the range Pillow Talk ( pink nude ), Pink Venus ( peachy nude ), Iconic Nude ( true nude ), Savage Rose ( rosy red ) and Kiss ‘n’ Tell ( true red ).
I only own these two, for now…
Pillowtalk – a beautiful neutral pink colour that would work for so many lips. Great for retouching uneven lips ( hence the name Re-Shape & Re-Size ), amazing to create a true nude lip look. It’s not the most unique of colours but the long lasting formula and the pigmentation are amazing! There is a drugstore dupe for it, the Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in East End Snob, which is pretty close but obviously not the same!
And…
Pink Venus – a nude pinky peach and less pink than the name suggests. This will definitely be “the one” I’ll be using on my lips in the warmer months when I will wear more coraly, bright lipsticks.
Like all the lip liners I’ve tried these aren’t too moisturizing so keep in mind to prepare you lips before the application, as I advised you to do in my previous post Red Lips, Dark Lips – DO’s and DONT’S…
– wearing Charlotte Tilbury’s Lip Cheat Re-Shape & Re-Size Lip Liner Pillowtalk on it’s own
– wearing Pillow Talk under the Charlotte Tilbury’s K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick in Stoned Rose ( see post here )
The Burberry Lip Definer in #02 Dusty Rose is pretty similar to Pillow Talk, only that it’s a bit rosier and the formula is a bit dryer, I find. This was the lip liner that changed my whole lipstick game, when a makeup artist used it to do my makeup on a Burberry counter in Milan, a few years ago. I went through a couple of these already and I have a few more shades, but I picked this one because this is still a favourite after all this time!
I already used it in a post, in a summery lip combination with the Burberry Lip Glow in #19 Mallow Pink ( see full post here ).
In the picture below you can see swatches of all my favourite lip liners including…
… the Dior Universal Lip Liner. I saved “the best for last” as they say!
This is a creamy, soft, colourless lip liner which truly goes with everything you want to wear on your lips. It’s my favourite to use with red and dark lipsticks, because applying a richly coloured lip liner can be as tricky as applying the lipstick itself! To avoid all that struggle you take this one, you go swish! swish! and your contour is done flawlessly! This lip liner is the one I used in my every single red, bright or dark lipstick swatch I did this far on annie’s beauty….
– wearing the Dior Universal Lip Liner under Tom Ford’s Lips&Boys Patrick ( see post here )
– wearing the Dior Universal Lip Liner under the Tom Ford Crimson Noir ( see post here )
– wearing the Dior Universal Lip Liner under the Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Pandore ( see post here and here )
You’ll see no traces of bleeding or a wrong application… And I already told you I’m not a pro! It “behaves” so well with all the different formulas of lipstick I’ve tried it with! This is my most used lip liner and I go through these as if they were Maltesers Mini Chocolate Bunnies. I hope you can see it in the swatches too even though there’s no much to see!
Are you using lip liners? Please share your favourites!
See you soon, Beautiful!
xx, Annie

Only with red lipstick. Here in Romania we have a cheap brand named “golden rose” and they make amazing lipliners ☺️

Well, the dior lipliner is definitely on my wish list! I have been struggling with lipliners for so long (wrong texture, wrong color) so that will be coming home with me soon 😀
On a side note, I am currently wearing the pandore dior gloss from your giveaway and I love it :D:D

Definitely recommend the Universal Lip Liner! It’s the easiest to use! It doesn’t really matter if you’re not drawing the most precise line on your lips when you use this one!
Ahh! I’m so happy to hear that! The colour is gorgeous indeed! But how do you like the texture and the formula!
I also wore Pandore a couple of days ago on one of my “trips” to the office! ( … on my week off that is! ) 😂😂😂
Lots of 😘😘😘

I have to agree with your true confession… Annie! Why is it that we let ourselves miss this essential step?! I owe a half dozen gorgeous MAC lip liners, as well has a handful of other greats (including a couple CTs and even a universal one)… With such care we apply our makeup in loving layers, only to miss this essential step. My a-ha moment was in Selfridges when the CT artist took at leas a full minute (maybe two) to carefully line my lips. I have a small upper lip (that I’m ever so slightly self conscious about), and the way she subtly overlined and reshaped my lips completely changed the look of my lips for the better. I just wish I had had the sense to have her explain to me how she achieved the shape because I haven’t been able to replicate it.
You’re also right about lip liners ability to extend the wear time of lipsticks. This is also a major complaint of us beauty lovers. So… Why is it that we often skip this essential step?
How’s the packing going, ma belle? I hope it’s fun rather than stressful. Sending you lots of hugs. Bisous.

I already have the answer to your question ma belle, even if it was meant to be an rhetoric one… We prefer to skip lining our lips with all those amazing lip liners that go rotten somewhere in our drawers, simply because of sheer laziness!
Yes, we apply face primer and we take 5 mins to do that because it has to be well buffed into our skin, then we take another 5 mins to make our foundation look flawless, then we add some concealer/concealers because we have to!… Then layers and layers of eyeshadows… And our lips, being the last to be done, are the ones done in a hurry – by then we’re out of time obviously!
Maybe we should do our lips after our base… Maybe like this we’re more careful with them!
Isn’t it amazing how a little lip liner can change the shape of our lips? I guess that with practice and not being scared to go overboard with your liner, which is not necessarily a bad thing as long as you don’t exaggerate, and you’ll be as much as a pro as that CT makeup artist you mentioned!
You’re beautiful anyway but I feel sorry about all those CT and MAC lip liners you mentioned! Haha!…
Packing is going well! I never stress when it comes to it as I always like to travel light!
Beaucoup des bisous ma chérie! 😘😘😘

Good girl! Packing light is a true art. LOL. I’m glad we agree!
And, maybe we should make a habit of lips after foundation. After all, if the lip liner is going to prolong our lipstick wear time, why shouldn’t we??

Haha! You’re so right my lovely! Packing light can easily be considered an art!… Since it’s not easily accessible for everyone! 😂😂😂 I’ve perfected my art of packing light when I was in Uni? Geography was one of my majors and we had obligatory 10 to 14 days trips twice a year! 14 days stuff had to be crammed in a backpack at most! LOL
So, four years and several trips later it eventually entered in my blood system! 😁😁😁
And boy I’m I thankful for that! 👌😌
Haha! 😘😘😘

What an amazing opportunity! I wish that universities here in the US required more (preferably international) travel. I think it’s so important for you to see their great big world.

Well, I was extremely lucky from that point of view! I got to know my country and a few other ones while in Uni. Went to Bulgaria, Hungary and Czech Republic. And I had the best time ever! 👌😕

I hope you got to eat some good food on your travels, as well. We were lucky enough to have a Hungarian chef who lived near my childhood home. OMG. I have never in my life eaten more heavenly food! To this day, thinking of his Hungarian goulash makes me something so much beyond just hungry. His food takes gourmet to a new level!

Yeeees! I had the best Hungarian goulash ever at a small restaurant near Budapest! OMG and their sweets! Gosh! I’m hungry only thinking! 😳😋👌😌

Haha! You’re most welcome! And if you trust me enough, I can prepare some of our traditional dishes myself! Or better I will take you home to my mom’s!
But you need to travel light too because you’re going to be carrying back a few extra kilos! Hahaha! 😂😂😂
Fair warning there! 😁😁😁

Hehe! That sounds WONDERFUL!! Let’s make that happen sometime not too far into the future. Of course you and Gabs would be most welcome to visit if you decide to travel the Southwest of America.
And, you’re right!! That’s the best part of packing light. One must have space to take the goodies home!

Ummm! That’s bad indeed! We fortunately have MAC here and it’s been a while since! Even though I’m not their biggest fan I sure enjoy a trip to MAC from time to time!
Thing is I can’t order MAC online because they don’t ship here! As if I was living in Narnia! 😩😔😳😕😤
At least you can get them online!

It’s good to have the choice though! I can get them online but they don’t ship here! I need to stay getting it delivered to a hub in the uk then to me. How ridiculous! Same with Charlotte Tilbury & Tom Ford 😥 so stupid!

Absolutely! I couldn’t agree more! That’s not necessary at all!
The weirdest things we do for makeup though!
I have my friends bored with always and always asking them to buy things for me! I’m so lucky and grateful I have them! Otherwise my makeup collection would have been reduced to half of its content, I think! 😕
