I’ve been pretty selective with my skincare lately ( hence the lack of reviews ), as I was testing this: the Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil.
I’ve been curious to test this product and its “miraculously effects” on my skin, ever since I first saw it online. So, when Addison from Sunday Riley contacted me and told me that I was selected to receive a full size of it, I was beyond excited, as you can tell!
It wasn’t long after that that I became a #LUNAtic!
But before we head onto to the actual review, let’s have a look at this luxurious packaging – a cell of cardboard, with the inside made of a spongy material all to protect this graceful bottle of miraculous oil! Just beautiful! First point taken Sunday Riley!
Among the ingredients you can find the famous blue tansy, avocado oil, grape seed oil and German Chamomile. A truly impressive list of ingredients and beneficial oils! Point two taken as well!
Luna is marketed as a retinoid treatment oil that will help with sign of ageing, size of pores and the appearance of damaged skin, while simultaneously correcting damage caused by the sun, time, and pollution. I’ve been using it for over a month now so I can definitely agree that it lives up to all these brave claims above! And now you got all the points available!
But what makes Luna this effective and in such short time?
I did a bit of a research and what I found out was that the Retinol Luna uses is not the usual Retinol/Retinoid that easily oxidizes in the presence of Oxigen!
Luna uses a Retinol called Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate that is the Trans-Retinol Ester of all retinoic acids – if you like. This is the active ingredient that fights the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of skin elasticity in your skin!
Also Luna is a water free formula which reduces the oxidation process a lot! Therefore this oil has to be massaged in as gently as possible to keep the potential risk of oxidization to a minimum. Other water-free formulas had silicones or alcohols among their ingredients – which increased the risk of dryness and irritation associated with vitamin A products. This Retinol is encapsulated with Dimethyl Isosorbide, a solvent which increases the solubility of many different active ingredients and increases their penetration into the skin, keeping the hydration levels of the skin in decent parameters.
Here’s when the other oils come in hand: Blue Tansy – heals damaged skin and contains strong anti-redness properties, also helps with eczema and dermatitis, Avocado Seed Oil: Plumps the look of fine lines and contains anti-redness properties; rich in vitamins B, C, D, E, and A, Chia and Concord grape further reduce the risk of irritation, and German Chamomile treats inflamed, irritated skin.
This is the “academic” part of this product that maybe you want to know, maybe not! What you DO need to know is that you go to bed at night to wake up to firmer, clearer skin by morning!
The first week, I was using it every night on freshly cleansed face to test it and see how my skin reacted! No painful irritations, no break-outs, no redness! My skin got brighter, clearer and more even instead! It also made the application of foundation faster and a real pleasure in the mornings!
I now use a couple of drops every other day and massage it gently into my skin, until the initial blue colour fades into… nothing, basically! This is the signal you need to know the oil works anyway!
I’ve tested it combined with the other products in my evening skincare routine as well, but I have to say that I liked it a lot more by itself! I saw better results like that!
It smells a little earthy, like wild flowers and hay and I can definitely get the smell of the chamomile oil. It’s unmistakable! But not disturbing at all!
Definitely recommend this oil even for those with sensitive skins!
See you soon, beautiful!
xx, Annie

I haven’t tried retinols before, but I’m very familiar with acids so I think my skin will be able to handle it. And I love a good face oil so I think Luna will be the perfect balance. I’m on a spending ban so it will be a while before I purchase it but it sure is on the list. My go to serum is Estee Lauder Advance Night Repair, an oldie but a goodie!

hi my lovely Anne!
sorry it took me almost two months to came up with this review but it was precisely because it’s not the cheapest of products and because it’s a retinol-based product that I postponed uploading it!
I’ve been using this religiously all this time and even if it’s not an everyday product it clearly is an amazing treatment to safely use every other day!
I saw immediate signs of improvement in the appearance of my skin meaning texture, brightness, pores, fine lines, black heads… my skin looked “youthful” if that makes sense! definitely give it a go! 😉

maybe, winter time will be better for Luna, but you still have to wear SPF! that’s the deal with retinol-based products and you need to gradually incorporate it in your skincare routine if your skin isn’t used to that!
please keep that in mind lovely! 😉

I got my samples from Sephora. They will make you some if you go in and ask. My skin type is sensitive to certain things. Artificial fragrances mostly. I have been using retinol products since I was in my early 20’s so I do not get much of a reaction from products that contain it. This oil I have not had a reaction to. I think it depends on the products you use in conjunction with retinol as well.

and yes, I also think that it depends on the products you combine it with! and if you use an SPF!
I red online some cases of people who got sun spots and sun burns because they didn’t used solar protection while using products containing retinol!

I have heard mixed reviews on this either people love it or hate it. I am glad to hear it worked well for you.

well lovely! I don’t know what to say! but since it works for my sensitive skin I really do recommend it! it’s a treatment though and it should be carefully applied! and SPF is also a must! overall I’m really delighted to use it! 😉
have a great weekend!
lots of xx

Totally agree! SPF is a must!!! Thanks you have a great weekend too!

yes, we should use it not only when we’re doing our treatments but on a daily basis! I sometimes forget to apply it and sometimes I simply don’t feel like~ which is so bad, I know!
lately, and I mean since I got burned like crazy in April, I’ve used it everyday, religiously though! 😉 xx

Yes, I use Retinol products. I haven’t had any issues with the OZ Naturals, Paula’s Choice, and Neutrogena ones I have tried. I have tried a few others I just can’t think of them now. Have a lovely weekend!

I only used PC from the ones you mentioned and never had problems with them! and I saw great results too!
I will keep an eye on OZ Naturals!
they sound pretty good! let’s see if they ship here! 😉

Right now I have been using the OZ Naturals Super Youth 2.5% Retinol Moisturizer without any serum. If I want extra moisturizing, I use a sheet mask that evening. Yes, I am bad. I am going to start incorporating the OZ Naturals serum though. Serums usually make my face breakout A LOT so I am scared of them.

I have never heard of the brand so I had to Google it! haha! but I’ve discovered that they have a hyaluronic acid serum that sounds particularly tempting! and beyond affordable!

have a lovely evening!

That’s great to hear! No I haven’t – I tend not to experiment much with my face products as I’m prone to breaking out so I like sticking to what works for me, however retinol-based products sounds good for my kind of skin

LOL so before reading this answer I went and asked you once more if you’re familiar with retinols in skincare! LOL old age, my lovely! it’s definitely getting me! hahaha! xx

you should give retinols a go though! but if you had issues with your skin in the past you’d better ask advice from your dermatologist! they’ll know what products to recommend you! 😉
and make sure you gradually incorporate them into your skincare routine as well! 😉 xx

I’m a bit boring with my skin care cos I’m scared I’ll break out! I tend to stick with what my dermatologist recommended for me, however I’ve noticed that this seems to apply more for cleaners as scrubs and moisturisers haven’t broken me out. I just use a moisturiser from La Roche Posay but looking for new things (not a cleanser though to be safe hehe)

haha! I see! I was the one to stick to the skincare regimen I knew that worked for me, but lately I have been sent some products to try and I had to stray away!
don’t get me wrong I do still use my skincare staples – those products that will never leave my routine! 😉

ohh really? haha my goodness i’ve been using the same cleanser for yrs and yrs and yrs loll. Just started a new one that was a gift – my skin really broke out but seems to be getting back to normal slowly

yeah! this breaking out think after changing a skincare product or tool has a name also! it’s called purging! and what it does is to somehow force all the impurities out of your face to leave it clean and healthy!
the bad thing is that your skin does that at its own pace and you have to bare with this process for a while… which is the toughest part! 😉 xx
LikeLiked by 1 person
Ohh I see. Removing impurities even if the skin was fine before? Yes v frustrating but its getting better thankfully
LikeLiked by 1 person
even if lovely! your skin is never “clean” or “fine” as you said! there’s always dust, dirt, noxes, even our own oils that can destroy its balance! …
very frustrating indeed! but it’s amazing that it’s already getting better! 😉 xx

Yes very true 😦 I was referring to lack of break outs though. Yes better! I also put some tanner that dries the skin so it cleared it up lol

I think the best ones to start with if you’re a newbie are those from Paula’s Choice! Eve Lom has a few good ones as well and this brand called Roc if you’re familiar with it! and of course, Sunday Riley! these are the ultimate luxury skincare products though! 😉 xx

Sounds like a great product. I’ve tried a sample of their Good Genes serum and have to say I was impressed. As a skin care professional, I have to applaud the incorporation of the sunscreen advisory in the notes. 🙂

it really is a good one! and I found out that you can also ask for samples of this one as well at your Sephora counters! so check it out!
I’ve heard great things about Good Genes as well!, but I haven’t tried anything but Luna and Artemis… yet! and they both were amazing on me!
I hope you’re having a great week ahead!

Luna is nothing like the Midnight Recovery! Luna gives you a fresh face in a matter of hours!
I love my Kiehl’s oil as well though! for different reasons and different purposes! actually it saved my skin when I got my first sunburn this year!
you can find the whole story in a post I already wrote here on the blog! 😉
all in all, I definitely recommend Luna! it will amaze you! 😉 😀 xx

What are the different reasons and purposes of using the kiehls if you don’t mind me asking? Wondering if I need both? They are both pricey though! But that won’t stop me from trying it some day, I’ve realized I needed to take care of my skin and don’t mind spending more if it works! Xx I’ll have to check out your post!

If you ask my non-professional self, my lovely I’dsay that Luns is a stronger treatment that the Kiehl’s Midnight! And you get faster results! The chemistry that happens when using them is both different as well! Bot aim to the same results though!
So it’s definitely up to up to you! 😊xx

Hmm…Maybe I’ll wait till I run out of kiehls, or see if I can return it, whats the price tag on this product?
