Makeup never ceases to amaze me!
Every single day I discover new things… New products, new formulations, new terms and techniques!… Today I bring you two of the newest trends Strobing and Clown Contouring.
The what has become today the #strobingphenomena is not something new in the beauty world, all renown makeup artists have been doing it for a while ( maybe you have already seen Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic doing it in some of his Instagram pictures or his tutorials! ).
What’s this STROBING thing anyway?
It’s the same thing as highlighting, the good old highlighting technique under another, fancier – if you ask me!, name.
The technique is in fact the same with only two minor differences, the first being the finish of it! While what’s now becoming “the traditional highlighting” is meant to give a more natural look to the face, the today popular strobing comes like a more dramatic version of it, with a plus of dewiness in the finish, something close to a wet look – very fresh, very luminous, that in my opinion is the perfect look for the summer, looking excellent with a tan.
Another slight difference I discovered while doing my research online, is that strobing is preferred to be achieved more with cream products than powders.
I guess we all are familiar with MAC Strobe Cream! It has been around since the early ’90, the Clarins Beauty Flash Balm is a cult product out even longer than that… But it seems that today this trend is taking over and brands come out on the market more and more with amazing highlighting palettes and cream glowing products. So it would be a shame not to take advantage of them, right?!
Here you have some options according to your skin tone: RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, $38; It Cosmetics Hello Light Anti-Aging Crème Illuminizer, $24; Benefit Sun Beam Golden Bronze Complexion Highlighter, $26; NARS The Multiple in “South Beach,” $39.

STROBING how-to step-by-step
Step 1:
Start by preparing the base like for any other makeup look, by hydrating it. In strobing, this is the step where you can add to your face cream a luminous liquid perfecting base like the Chanel Le Blanc Sheer Illuminating Base, the Tom Ford Illuminating Primer, the Eve Lom Flawless Radiance Primer SPF 30 – a bit of SPF is essential right?!, or the Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow!
Step 2:
Add just the perfect amount of foundation making sure you’re not using a high coverage one, otherwise what would be the point of prepping your skin with an illuminating product, right?! And also make sure that you blend it with tapping motions – a beauty blender or a dense stippling brush, even your fingers would be just perfect for that! Make sure that everything is perfectly blended out and there are no harsh lines in sight!
Step 3:
Use a tiny amount of translucent powder, only in the areas where you get oilier during the day!
Step 4:
Dust a bit of extra-highlighter in strategic places like your eyes – inner corner, brow bone, enhance your cheek bone, sculpt your nose, and emphasis your pout… Basically all the places that are meant to catch the light!
And you’re pretty much done!
But remember, you’re aiming to get an angelic glow not to look like a disco ball/stroboscope – *hint strobing!, like this lady here:
[ Read more on what common mistakes to avoid when you’re doing your makeup, in this 10 most common MAKEUP MISTAKES article I wrote a while back! ]
As for CLOWN CONTOURING…
… It’s the next big thing you know!?…
Just when we thought that the Kim-K contouring technique was going to be taken over by strobing, here it is resurrected by the good old YouTube! This girl’s tutorial went viral for example!
Like strobing, clown contouring isn’t a new discovery! It was very popular in the ’60 among makeup artists like Joe Blasco and many others!
Clown contouring is – if you ask me, a clever technique of blending a circus-themed makeup, which consists in strategically applying layers of products in some key points of your face and a whole lot of skilled blending!
I am so not going to demonstrate that here, I’m going to leave that to the actual professionals! Enjoy this Clown Contouring tutorial by one of my favourite makeup artists, Wayne Goss!
The transformation is pretty amazing, don’t you think?! Although I definitely don’t think this is a look I’m going to be doing on my morning commute anytime soon, if you know what I’m saying!…
Got to love makeup, right?! It never gives you a dull moment! Haha!
See you soon, beautiful!
xx, Annie
INTERESTING FACTS, TRICKS AND TIPS:
- choose the highlighting shade that works best for your skin tone
-
avoid applying your highlighter in places like forehead and cheek areas where you have enlarged pores, acne scarring or other imperfections
-
if you’re going for the glowing look do use your highlighting products but make sure that you balance that by using all matte products ( blush, powder, eyeshadow )

definitely need to be creative and then also a lot of CREAM products ;P I think it’s cool from an artistic standpoint but definitely not an every day or average makeup lover technique. More for the cool instagram photos or videos! As for the glowing skin yes I have. I did a video on strobing for oily skin if you feel like checking it out. Glowing skin is hard for me since I get greasy. haha no one wants that I just slipped in butter look ;P
have a great day as well!!

Same here my lovely! I’m not glamming up on a daily basis because I work in the bussiness area of things! So natural makeup is a must!
But now, in the summer when things are “lighter” around here, I can do a bit more! 😁
Still not as much as I’d love to!

Hahah, no worries! I can do a blog post or youtube video if you want, but my TOP favorites right now for highlighting is the mary lou manizer and i just got champagne pop in the mail and it’s gorgeous with my skin tone, as for contouring i love the bhcosmetics forever nude contour palette and i love my chocolate soleil bronzer since it’s a neutral brown for contouring. Not too warm. But lately I’ve just been doing light bronzing with the NYC bronzer in Sunny or the Laura Geller Balance N Brighten Foundation in Tan (I thought it was a good match for foundation online…oh was I wrong!) hahaha Also if you ever have more questions or whatever feel free to shoot me an email beautybydaniieb@gmail.com if you don’t feel like spamming your comment section ;P Xx

oh well, it’s a full-face of makeup which is not my style anyway! I’m more for a neutral kind! and I don’t work in a circus or a theatre, I don’t film everyday or take professional photos to have a flawless makeup! 😉

I am! But not too drastically though I find I look a bit weird if I over do it. I love using the Too Faced Soleil Matte Bronzer as well as the Bronzers from Sephora. As for highlighting I alternate between the Wet n WIld Fergie Highlighters, Maybelline’s Hi-Light powder, the Givenchy Healthy Glow Powder, and my Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick 🙂 I have the Anastasia Beverly Hills powder contour kit but I hardly use it except for the Vanilla shade. The only cream products I own are the Smashbox sticks.. I’ve used them a few times but I still can’t quite master the technique lol, maybe using the beauty blender or the real techniques sponge might do the trick 😛

Ohh i really like it!!! I love that shimmery look, especially for the summer time, think it looks so pretty. As much as i love a contoured look, i am really warming up to this softer look of make up. I just dont like highlight on my nose though, i feel it makes me look oily – but looks awesome on he cheekbones. what do you think?

I think that you should apply your highlight in a way to advantage your figure and hide whatever flaws you might have! I personally don’t like it around my nose either so I simply avoid that area!
But yes, I do love the soft and glowing look you can achieve with it!

Hey Annie, I recently watched some Wayne Goss tutorials on these techniques. While I have to admit it’s cool, it’s SO MUCH WORK! Since I am really on the lazy side of things, I don’t think I’ll ever try that!

I really like the makeup brushes from WG that I have. The problem is now it is only available through Beautylish, and it’s not as easy to get as when the brand was available through lovemakeup (UK-based).

I’m finding some people are taking the strobing thing a little too far and it looks like they smeared butter all over their cheekbones. I guess when the trend emerged, they forgot to emphasize…… SUBTLE.

LOL Allow me to disagree a bit my lovely! It’s not that they didn’t emphasised anything! A trend is a trend, a guidance… It’s up to us how we adapt the trend to our personal needs and liking! 😉
So when you see “walking disco balls” on the streets, it’s not but their fault that your eyes get hurt! LOLOLOL 😅😅😅

I don’t get all the hype on the Strobing, is just highlighting with cream instead of powder. I’ve done it for years with mac strobe!
Great Post!

Thank you so much lovely for the lovely reply!
It’s not much of a deal if you minimise it like that! It’s just what has been used more by the big makeup artists lately! That’s why it was called a “trend”! It will fade away eventually like all trends do! Haha!
It’s something used since the early ’90 as well! It’s not like it is something the makeup world has never seen before!
I’ve been doing it as well, at a more natural scale with Chanel Le Blanc, Clarins skin enhancers, etc…
