Beauty Facts: Perfume – How To Make Your Favourite Fragrance Last Longer…

The fact I’m going to expose next, I’m absolutely positive happened to all of us at least once, at a certain point in our lives!

So… You went into your favourite perfumery, fell head over heels for a certain perfume, and since you couldn’t imagine life without wearing it everyday, you had to bring it home with you! Such a happy kid you were! But when you spritz it on, guess what?!… It disappeared before you knew it! “What you did wrong?!”, you start asking yourself… “Where did it went?!” That’s going to be another unsolved mystery!…

Or maybe not! Because I’m going to try to explain in “poor words” what actually happened!

First of all, my lovelies, perfumes are made out of volatile essences, ingredients which in contact with our skin are activated, and become… well!… volatile, what do you know!?!?!?! ( for those who didn’t knew, the root of the word “Volatile“ traces back to the Latin verb volare, which means “to fly” – according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary ). So bye-bye, perfume!

The main “culprit”, responsible for this unhappy event always happening, is actually the “heat” of our own body… Which is also influenced by a handful of factors: weather, temperature, blood pressure, food… Yes, food! It is well known that meat eaters have a body temperature a bit higher that vegetarians, that’s why the same perfume smells differently on different persons!

It’s what’s called “different PH”! But in fact, it’s all about chemistry!

So, here’s what you need to do for your perfumes to last longer on you:

1. make sure you apply perfume after a shower or a long bath! Scents last longer on moist skins, “when all your pores are opened”. So feel free to dose yourself in perfume after drying off with your towel, but before you’re getting dressed!
2. place a couple of spritzes “strategically”. The “hottest points ” of your body are the ones you should apply your perfume on: neck, behind your ears, inside of your elbows, cleavage, stomach, back of your knees… Be careful though when you tend to slather yourself in perfume… It’s kind of essential for other people to still breathe while you’re around! No need to cover all there areas either, the most recommended are: back of your ears, inside of your elbows and knees, areas that favor evaporation, so the fragrance will be released continuously throughout the day!
3. DON’T “rub” your fragrance! You’ll only heat the area and “break” the particles of fragrance in smaller divisions, which will volatilize even faster.
4. double your perfume with a body lotion with the same scent!
5. use your perfume in your hair… also sparingly, because perfume can be drying!… and you know, people need to breathe… still!…
6. look after your perfumes! Make sure you deposit them in proper storage conditions, away from light and heat, which will cause them to break down sooner than expected! And by no means, don’t keep your perfumes in the shower!
7. my favourite “trick”: layer your perfumes! Make your favourite scent smell even better by combining  softer, airy scents with strong and longer-lasting ones ( just an example! )! Like that you’ll give them body, make them last longer and why not, create your own perfume that will only smell like… YOU! Be unique!
8. feel free to take your favourite perfume with you and freshen up during the day! for that you have perfume atomisers and perfumes perfume refills with their own fancy cases check some options here and here, like my MFK Amyris Femme photographed above.

MFK Amyris femme – The most sensual & feminine perfume for Spring

With your thoughts flying to the exotism of the island of Jamaica and your heart living in the romantic city of Florence, Maison Francis Kurkdjian‘s Amyris Pour Femme dwells between the sunshine and the earth, being the magnificent creation of the two.

It’s a sublime perfume, the most sensual and feminine I have ever tried on! The sweet, delicate and slightly powdery scent of the amyris tree is doubled by the extremely delicate and rare scent of the orris rhizome – the two of them make the core of this perfume. They are brought together by the brightess and the freshness of the citrus notes, and the earthy touches of Haitian vetiver and the amber base give body and structure to this otherwise “common” floral perfume – the oriental twist, I personally love in my perfumes!

I’m usually loving strong and empovering scents all year round, and I’m not so keen on florals or fruitty ones! In summer I like fresh scents like Annick Goutal‘s Eau d’Hadrien!

Not too fresh, not too floral, not too deep… Amyris Pour Femme is the perfect balance of everything mentioned above, which makes it in my opinion utterly feminine and an excellent transitional perfume. And when we all celebrate femminity and everything that comes with it, other than during spring, when everything is brought to live again by Mother Nature?!

LM Sensual & Decadent Perfume Launch Event at Madison Luxury Perfumery Bucharest

A week ago, I had the pleasure of a marvellous sensorial encounter.

Guilty of that the lovely parfumeur Laurent Mazzone and his incredibly sensual, warm, spicy, boozy, hugable and unique creations!

First impression. Laurent Mazzone has that particular typology of the bohemian artist, chic and full of paradoxes! A very sensitive artist, which transfers into his creations emotions, experiences and feelings with the same nonchalance of the French from Le Marrais… An exceptional “maître parfumeur”!

It’s been a while since we have his creations in Madison, but I’ve never had the time to focus my whole attention on them! Well, this was the night I just did that and I was left wondering what was I doing all this time!? Why haven’t I discovered LM fragrances earlier?!…

I do know the answer… I’m the worst creature of habit! But thank goodness I have all the good reasons to change!

16 good reasons to be more precise… all made of eau de parfum, extrait de parfum, and two gorgeous body elixirs! Plus an array of candles following the same sensual olfactory notes!

My absolute favourites have to be the darkest, most sensual ones like Ambre Muscadin ( with ambre and vanilla notes but not that artificial, overpowering vanilla extract… I’m talking the glorious Bourbon vanille  ), Black Oud ( a fragrance recommended for Men that I would gladly wear myself since it has oud in it ) and of course, Hard Leather ( another manly fragrance – the perfect mix of leather, oud, rum and vanillla – all my favourite scents in one place! ) an excellent winter scent, which will probably be my next purchase!

Yes, I’m guilty of loving strong, oriental scents!

But the star of the night was Monsieur Laurent’s most recent release: Sensual & Decadent – the scent that “goes beyond the search for conventions, the embodiment of all the luxury and glamour” ( LM ).

Lisylang, Rhubarh, Heliotrop, Labadanum, Oud, Vanilla Infusion – this is Sensual & Decadent. What else can I say about a perfume that speaks for itself!?

Nahh! Maybe I should add just one thing…The nose who worked on the fragrances is Jerome Epinette – as in the man behind Byredo and Atelier Cologne – Jerome Epinette, of course!… As in the creator of Oribe and NEST perfumes! Got it?!

But the highlight of my night was definitely meeting Monsieur Laurent himself, having the opportunity to ask him a few questions – like a mini-interview about his creations and fooling around taking a couple of pictures, silly selfies included!

Next, you have some of the answers that resume the whole philosophy of the House of Perfume Laurent Mazzone, from the man himself:

A: I admit, I know way too little about LM Perfumes! What should I know about them? What’s the whole philosophy of the brand?

LM: I create perfumes that evoke memories! To create memories you need to have lived! If you have lived, you will never forget! So, Life lived in Intimacy is the whole philosophy here. And my perfumes inspire Intimacy! 

A: What made you create your first perfume?

LM: My love for perfume, of course! Working in the fashion industry for so many years, I was able to observe young people expressing themselves throughout the outfits they created. So it only came naturally for me to try to create perfumes that express my feelings, emotions… All that I think all that I feel and all that I have lived this far is encapsulated in my perfumes.

A: Which one of your fragrances do you think it would suit me best?

LM: […] the new Sensual & Decadent, my latest creation of course!

… All in that cozy atmosphere I already used you with!

Switching to Autumn colours… The 2015 Edit

In terms of beauty, Autumn for me means only two things: colours and scents!

I will have to leave behind last Summer’s glowing skin, the bold, orange-reds and neon-pinks and replace them with earthy-toned blushers, copper, brown and purple eyeshadows and lips to vary from deep reds to vampy plums!

A true delight for the eyes nonetheless!

Here is the colour scheme that will guide me through this season, completed by an Edit of products that will definitely stand out to me… And of course you will be seeing them a lot in my upcoming posts!

Earthy Browns:

• GIVENCHY Le Rouge Brun Createur, a new CHANEL Coco Shine from Les Autumnales 2015 Collection, BITE Beauty High Pigment Pencil Sand, DIOR Vintage and Grège – for the lips, BURBERRY Earthy for the cheeks and an array of brown eyeshadows from BURBERRY, BY TERRY, CHANEL, CHARLOTTE TILBURY and NARS ( check them out with all the swatches here ). 

Burnt Oranges and Coppers:

• MAC Eyeshadow in Coppering and as blushers BURBERRY Tangerine and HOURGLASS’ Dim Infusion, plus a certain CHANEL blush from the same Les Automnales 2015 Collection

Deep Reds and Wines:

• will be my lips with TOM FORD Crimson Noir, CHARLOTTE TILBURY Walk of Shame, BURBERRY Oxblood, CHARLOTTE TILBURY So Marylin and NARS and again, a CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine from the same Les Automnales Collection 
• the eyes will look glamorous with the CHARLOTTE TILBURY The Dolce Vita reddish-browns

Plums and Taupes:

• the BURBERRY Sheer Eyeshadows ( the old formula ), BY TERRY Ombre Blackstar and Chanel will be my first choices ( see the actual products with swatches here ), plus a gorgeous NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Mélusine that’s been waiting to be properly used for quite some time now
• lips TOM FORD Alasdhair and Pussycat, some NARS Audacious Lipsticks that are yet to arrive and of course, the ESTÈE LAUDER Insolent Plum. Cheeks: the reduced to pieces HOURGLASS Mood Exposure.

As for Scents, the fresh, zesty, Summer florals will have to step aside for now and make room for those deeper, smokier, sensual and sultry notes of oud, amber, incense, figs, blackcurrants – the accords of which will combine deliciously into a whole that will compliment perfectly the smell of the falling leaves, in the misty Autumn mornings.

For that I will recur to my beloved Maison Francis Kurkgjian Oud ( the perfume I’ve been waiting to explore my whole life ), my trusty Escentric Molecules 01 – the one I usually layer with other perfumes in my collection because I simply adore the gorgeous smokiness and depth it adds to the most average scent and my most recent discovery, which I’m clearly obsessed with – the Terry de Gunzburg Haute Parfumerie, Parti Pris. ( Yes, By Terry does perfume as well as makeup and skincare! )

DIPTYQUE will take over my Home Scents this year with Baies ( of course! ) and the new acquisition the 34 BLVD Saint Germain ( their iconic scent ), but my favourites from BYREDO aren’t too far behind… Bibliothèque and this year’s exclusivist release 1996 will also play their part!

 

Final recap: gorgeous colours and cozy atmosphere will be the coordinates of my Autumn 2015!

Looking for the Scent of Spring… Rancé Rose de Rose Perfume

I bet you’ve all heard about transitional makeup, transitional skincare… but never had the idea of thinking about a transitional perfume! I for sure, didn’t payed too much attention to the matter… until this year when we had the longest winter ever! Snow mid-April?! Seriously?!

So, I couldn’t wear my heavy winter perfumes because in my mind we should’ve had Spring weather! I couldn’t wear light floral perfumes either because, again, in my mind it was too cold for that… Until I’ve rediscovered this lovely scent by Rancé – Rose de Rose.

MERRY CHRISTMAS beautiful!

The last week of 2014 has officially started which also means that there’s only one week until my birthday! Yes, I was born on the 31st of December pretty close to the fireworks!

Looking back, 2014 has been THE year for annie’s beauty…! Well, I’ve been around for 10 months only but I somehow managed to make a good couple of wonderful friends who share the same love for “anything beautiful” as myself, and to whom I can’t wait to write every single day!

That’s why I love and I am thankful for ma belle and très chère ( insert a nasal French accent here ) Jackie – with you I have the best conversations ever, you can check our comments if there’s any doubt about that!; you’ll see that they’re getting longer and longer, to my personal satisfaction.

Serene, thank you lovely for your friendship and for always challenging me out of my comfort zone!

L’OCCITANE – 2014 Bag Essentials

The things a woman carry in her bag!?…

It is a mystery even for herself how the smallest bag can carry so many things… And let us clarify one thing: everything in there is necessary ( yeah, sure!!!). No wonder a woman can not find a thing in her bag when she needs it the most!!!

And being the woman that I am, my bag is a mess too – to use an elegant term!

So the seasons changed – we are half way through September, already?! I felt like I needed a change. So, since the classic haircut was not enough this year, I felt it would be the right time to change my bag!

While going through the stuff in my “summer bag”, I came up with the idea of this post. Why not to let you guys know which were my absolute essentials for the hot, summer days… Between me and you, it seems like summer was not enough this year!

At a closer look, the products I found inside my bag are most of them from the L’Occitane Verveine Collection. Étrange coïncidence!

I absolutely love the Verveine range from L’Occitane. So refreshing! And the scent is so zesty, and citrusy even though the verveine is not part of the citrus family. And before I forget, this scent complimented so well my favourite summer perfume – the Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien. If you do not know what I am talking about, here is the link to the review of this amazing, gorgeous, unique perfume! 

In the picture above you can see the actual products that “lived” in my bag this summer.

From left to right I had:

– a mini roll-on perfume to apply whenever I needed to freshen up a little… and did not managed to “locate” my Travalo with my Annick Goutal fragrance – two perfumes = double the chance to find my refreshing scent in that hot mess

– a hand sanitizer – not much to say about it. A hand sanitizer is… a hand sanitizer!

– a lightweight hand cream – this one is simply amazing! No greasy residue, no tacky hands, no weird after scent, no feeling like I-need-to-wash-my-hands after the application, it absorbs in a matter of seconds. It instantly became my go-to/ holy grail hand cream for summer

– a face mist – not going to talk much about this one since I have a full post dedicated to it and the other face mists I used this summer, read it here. And believe me, from all the face mists you will see in that post, I have so little left in that L’Occitane can and in my Caudalie Beauty Elixir spray bottle

– and the last item, missing from the picture though, was a pack of wet wipes from the same Verveine Collection. Those were the first to go, but I always make sure I have a new pack with me when the weather is hot.

I also carried with me a travel size of the L’Occitane Frisson de Verveine Shower Gel instead of a hand soap, and from the same line the Refreshing Gel for tired feet. Ladies, you are wearing heels too! You know what tired feet mean, right?!

Annick Goutal Eau d’Hadrien – My favourite fragrance for the Summer of 2014

 Nature and all her wonders guide me… Emotions find expression in fragrance. Fragrance is the music of my dreams. Fragrance is my inspiration.

Eau d’Hadrien is the fragrance the Belgian parfumeur Annick Goutal created in 1981, after a magnific trip to Southern Italy.

It is a fresh and sparkly blend also inspired by Marguerite Yourcenar’s novel “The Memoirs of Hadrian“, a historical novel with philosophical accents. This perfume captures the emotions of the Emperor Hadrian while he meditates on military triumphs, love of poetry and music, philosophy, and his passion for his lover Antinous.

This is Annick Goutal’s best selling fragrance. It combines essences of Sicilian lemon and grapefruit, with the subtle notes of the delicate citron, green mandarine and ylang-ylang. Then the woody and camphorated notes of the Tuscany cypress give body to this amazing perfume.

Without knowing it, it takes you to a walk through a garden of fruit ripened in the Italian Sun and everywhere you turn your head you will sense the freshness of citrus fruits in the shade of a lemon tree.

 Luxury is in the details

… and the luxury details are the first to please your eye. The sleek, feminine bottle, which has a retro vibe to it, the bow of golden thread, delicately knotted around the collar symbolizes the traditional nature of Annick Goutal Perfumes and comes straight out from Annick’s childhood and the happy times she spent helping her father in his confectionery shop.

Every time I wear this perfume, the citrus notes leave on my skin a light and discreet trail, especially with the Eau the Toilette. Evey time I discover new notes which make me fall in love again and again with this universal, energetic and fresh fragrance.

 

 

INTERESTING FACTS:

– by the late 5th Century, Babylon was the main market for the perfume trade.

– the Babylonians used to create their fragrances mainly cedar of Lebanon, cypress, pine, fir resin, myrtle, calamus and juniper.

– by that time all the fragrances came in the form of an oil, but when the Jews returned from captivity back to Babylon, they brought with them a heightened appreciation of fragrance, especially in the form of incense.

 

ESCENTRIC MOLECULES – MOLECULE 01, fatal attraction – the pheromonal perfumes

Me and the ESCENTRIC MOLECULES – MOLECULE 01 had the pleasure of being together for almost four years. I was lucky enough to be in London when the perfume was launched. It happened in 2010 at Harvey Nichols. Ever since, the brand has been on an ascensive lane, and the popularity of this unique perfume can be easily observed all-over the Internet world.

 

I bought it blindly being intrigued only by the innovative concept of it. It is a one ingredient perfume which reacts with the PH of your body releasing a pheromone specific to the person who wears it. How intriguing is that!?

The perfume is described as woody but in reaction with my skin it pulls out a bit vanillary, which I was really hoping to happen. The one ingredient in it is called ISO E SUPER – an ingredient which is supposed to have a magnetic olfactory impact on people around you close to the effect of pheromones. And it might actually work because I always get compliments when I wear it… from men and women, both!

It is known as the most sexy perfume in the world and stars like Kate Moss, Elton John and Dita Von Teese chose to be irresistible by using it.

The packaging of the product comes to complete the impact of the perfume visually, and to realize a “seductive contrast between lights and reflections”.

I use it a lot by itself and I always make sure I have my Travalo perfume atomizer filled with it, somewhere inside my purse. I also like to layer it under softer, floral perfumes to give them some deepness and body.

NEWS!!! Caudalie launched a new perfume – Parfum Divin de Caudalie

After the recent launch of their new patented Polyphenol C15 skincare line, Caudalie – the French brand that gave us the Beauty Elixir and some other emblematic products like the Vinosource SOS Thirst-Quenching Serum, which we all know, literally took over the beauty community, came out on the market with a long-awaited surprise.

Now, we all loved and shared our love for the Caudalie Divine skincare range in more than one occasion, ever since its release a few years ago. We all used at least once in our shower the Caudalie Divine Scrub and many of us have a little bottle of the Caudalie Divine Oil at home.

The scent of this range is so amazing that everyone repeatedly requested for a perfume. And Mathilde Tomas the woman behind the brand ( I have an entire post on Caudalie and their producs here ) decided to please her clients and recently released a perfume, which trapped in a bottle the essence of the Divine Oil scent. It is Mathilde’s first perfume created with the Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier. The brand already produces an Eau Fraîche collection, including the newest, Figue de Vigne.

The notes of this perfume are delicate as a cloud and contain a sensual blend of Bulgarian Rose Absolute, Moroccan Rose essence, Virginia cedar, vanilla and spicy pink pepper.

And if you weren’t sold yet by the description above, the perfume comes in a sleek 50 ml bottle with a “divine” gradient metallic look. For £39/45€, it will make your vanity look special.
